My name is Garry Eveleigh I was born and brought up in the Georgian town of Lymington, Hampshire, sandwiched between the Solent and English Channel and the New Forest and since I was a small boy, have been in love with the countryside and what Mother Nature can provide. At the age of just nine years old I was given my first taste of the sea on a local inshore trawler. After leaving school I trained as a boat builder at a local shipyard and after finishing my apprenticeship, became a successful inshore trawlerman skippering my own vessel, plying the local waters in search of my main quarry, oysters, sea bass and sole. While looking for a larger vessel, which would enable me to fish further afield, together with my friend and partner, I purchased a passenger vessel instead and have never looked back.
For the last 18 years, we have been operating our two man shipping company ‘Puffin Cruises’ from the old town quay, ferrying passengers to the nearby Isle of Wight and providing scenic cruises to the needles, rocks and lighthouse aboard our boat the ‘Island Princess’. Over the past 35 years, my enthusiasm for the outdoor life and my passion for cooking have given me a vast knowledge of seasonal wild produce; where to find it, how to pick it and how to cook it.
Today, I forage professionally for Lime Wood and The Pig hotels, providing their chefs with the freshest and most seasonal ingredients. I take guests out for foraging walks and enjoy sharing my knowledge. On returning from a morning in the forest, guests are delighted by the chefs creating dishes with their freshly gathered bounty.
Over the years I have been featured in many programmes and articles including: BBC2’s One Man and His Camper Van with Martin Dorey; ITV’s Countrywise Kitchen with Mike Robinson and The Hungry Sailors with Dick and James Strawbridge, Jeni Barnett’s Great Food Live with Colin Pressdee as well as features in the Daily Mail, The Field, Berthon Lifestlye. and Sainsburys Magazine. I have also gathered food for leading chefs including Rick Stein, Mark Hix and Angela Hartnett as well as Lime Wood’s head chef Luke Holder and The Pig’s James Golding.
